I just had the most wonderfully heart-warming conversation with my dear old friend Zooey. And she mentioned her band’s new video. First of all, I love her songs, both albums, I listen to them all the time. Second, as I just told her in an email, this video reminds me of our every-day lunchtime ritual while shooting 500 Days of Summer — hair/makeup trailer dance party! And if you think I’m exaggerating, think again, we really did dance it out after lunch every day.

Review of New FX show Terriers:

Terriers is a new show on the FX network with Donal Logue (Knights of Prosperity, Grounded for Life) and Micheal Raymond-James (True Blood, Black Snake Moan). It follows the lives of two not so perfect, unlicensed Private Detectives as they work a few less than reputable cases for some less than reputable clients. The idea behind the show is not new or unique with comparisons to a few other show previously aired or airing at the moment, not gonna name any here. But the way in which they deliver the show to the audience is what makes this series stand out from other dry wit detective stories out there. The main characters are an ex-alcoholic, ex-police detective (logue) and an ex-thief (raymond-james). They seem to have partnered up when their lives fell apart and when they needed a change in direction. They have a friendship that is like a slap in the face, with their dry witted wise cracks and the care free attitude that allows them to saunter around dangerous cases. It’s the interactions of the pair and how they hold their own in those dangerous times that shows the quality of the writing. From the first episode we are introduced to the main characters of ‘Hank Dolworth’ and ‘Britt Pollack’ as they indadvertedly involved themselves with some kind of high level conspiracy. Looking at them for the first time it would seem like the pair are just drifting through their lives trying to scrape together a bit of cash but deep down, below the greasy, dirty clothes and the unwashed, unshaven beards they have good detective instincts that keep them from to much trouble.

The show has a nice mix of the classic detective story of film noir and personal strife between the characters and their nearest relationships. This mix doesn’t subtract from either side of the action or drama and allows the audience a small break form tense moments. Taking the characters out of the moment and placing a different kind of tension in their lap.

In my opinion Terriers is one of the best new breed of Television shows available today. Still in its first season infancy, it has all the qualities of a great running series. The writing, the acting, the direction and even the setting in a californian coastal town is perfect. I wait anxiously each week until this show is aired again and give a giddy laugh and smile when it ends, like a chid who cannot wait to open a present. I look forward to seeing where this show goes and hope that it is renewed for another season.
